Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and that means it’s time to start planning your look for the big day. Aside from picking out the perfect outfit, and coordinating with Fall inspired nails, one of the most important aspects of any holiday look is your hairstyle. Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or just attending as a guest, having a festive and stylish hairstyle can help elevate your overall appearance. Here are 10 Easy Thanksgiving Hairstyle ideas to inspire you:
1. Slick Back Bun or Ponytail
This is probably the EASIEST of the Thanksgiving Hairstyles you can try this year. The slick back bun made famous and Pinterest-worthy by Sofia Richie, has also been the go-to hairstyle of the year.
She recently posted on her TikTok how she achieves her minimal effort look, and it really is so easy to recreate! Although she does this with freshly washed hair, many of my hairstylist friends don’t recommend that. Instead, this hairstyle is perfect for day 2 or 3 hair that is about to be washed.
Apply a generous layer of hair serum for that ‘slick’ texture and then coat the rest of your locks with a deep conditioning mask. Section off the top half of your hair and use the bottom half to decide where you want your bun or pony to sit, then secure it. Brush back the top to meet the bottom, ensuring you get all of the bumps out, and tie it off with another hair tie. It’s up to you if you want to have your part showing or not, but it really is as simple as that. Plus, you get the added bonus of nourishing your hair throughout the day. It’s just important that you fully wash your hair out after the festivities are over!
2. Braided Crown
For a more bohemian-inspired Thanksgiving Hairstyle, try a braided crown. It’s also a great choice if you have long hair, as it keeps your locks out of your face while still looking sophisticated.
To achieve this look, simply create two braids on either side of your head and then cross them over the top of your head, securing them with bobby pins. You can also add in some fall-inspired hair accessories, such as leaf-shaped clips or small flowers, to make the style even more festive. You can even braid in a silk scarf to really play up the boho vibe.
3. Messy Bun with a Twist Thanksgiving Hairstyle
If you want a low-maintenance yet stylish hairstyle for Thanksgiving, consider a messy bun with a twist. This look is easy to achieve and can be dressed up or down depending on your outfit.
To create the twist, simply take a section of hair from one side of your head and twist it back, securing it with bobby pins at the nape of your neck. Then gather the rest of your hair into a messy bun and secure it with an elastic. This Thanksgiving Hairstyle is perfect for those with medium to long hair. You can pull some face-framing pieces out and slightly curl them as well. Make sure to hairspray into place!
4. Half-Up Twisted Braid
If you have shorter hair that can’t quite make it into a full bun, consider a half-up twisted braid for your Thanksgiving gathering. This style is chic and easy to do, making it perfect for those who may not have a lot of time to get ready. Simply take two small sections of hair from the front of your head and twist them towards the back, securing them with bobby pins. Then take another small section from each side and repeat the process, creating a braided effect down the sides of your head. This style works well for both casual and dressy occasions, and you can always add cute hair pins as well!
5. Side Swept Curls
If you want to add some glamour to your Thanksgiving look and hairstyle, consider side-swept curls. This style can easily work with longer or shorter hair and can be achieved with a curling iron or hot rollers.
I love the T3 set for my go-to curl styles. Simply curl your hair away from your face and then brush through the curls while they’re still warm to create a softer look. Then sweep all of your hair to one side and secure it with bobby pins or an embellished hair clip. This hairstyle is elegant and adds a touch of old Hollywood glamour to any outfit.
6. Fishtail Braid
For another bohemian and laid-back hairstyle, try a fishtail braid for your Thanksgiving celebration. This style is perfect for those with long hair and adds texture and interest to any outfit. To achieve this style, divide your hair into two sections, and take small pieces from the outer edge of one section, and cross them over to the other. Repeat this process, alternating between the two sections until you reach the end of your hair. Secure with an elastic band and gently pull on the braid to loosen it for a more casual look. This hairstyle is perfect for outdoor celebrations or more relaxed gatherings.
7. Half Up, Half Down
If you can’t decide between an updo or leaving your hair down, why not go for both? A half up, half down hairstyle is a great option for Thanksgiving as it combines the elegance of an updo with the comfort of wearing your hair down. Simply pull back the top section of your hair and secure it with a clip or hair tie. For a trendy touch, add a hair ribbon. This soft, feminine accessory is everywhere this Fall and Winter and can give you a subtle pop of color if you want as well!
8. Fresh Blowout
A great option for most hair lengths, especially one with layers, is a fresh blowout. It’s a classic and stylish option for your Thanksgiving dinner and has made a popular comeback this Fall. The key to a successful blowout is using the right products and tools. After freshly washing your hair, use a volumizing mousse and a dime-size amount of blowout cream before beginning the process. Don’t forget to add in your heat protectant as well.
Now, there are so many styling tools out there that can help you achieve this holiday-perfect hair. The Dyson Airwrap is probably one you’ve seen most often as it can dry and style your hair at the same time. The traditional way though, is to use a round brush sweeping up while you blow dry sections of your hair. It’s a little bit of an arm workout, but definitely worth the process.
After each section is done, use large Velcro rollers to pin the loose curl. Alternate rolling up and away from you and down towards you with each new section. Even if you use a tool like the Dyson, hair experts still say to set the curl with rollers, so you can’t pass over this step! Hairspray while all of the rollers are in place and let it set until you’re ready to go! Release the rollers and do a quick little brush out, and you’ve got a beautiful blowout that will last all night long.
9. Bubble Pony Tail
Another easy and chic Thanksgiving Hairstyle option is the bubble ponytail. This style is perfect if you want to keep your hair out of your face while still looking put together and adding a touch of edge to your look. Start by brushing all of your hair back into a medium-high ponytail and securing it with an elastic. If you need more length or volume, you can add in some hair extensions like these from Amazon. Then, take a small elastic hair tie and tie it around the ponytail about 2-3 inches down from the top. Repeat this process until you reach the end of your ponytail. Gently tug on each section to add more volume and make the bubbles bigger. Finish off with some hairspray to keep everything in place. Adding in more hair ribbons over the elastics helps give this Thanksgiving Hairstyle a more festive and fun vibe.
10. Embrace your natural wavy/curly hair
Instead of fighting against your natural hair texture, embrace it! With the rise of embracing natural beauty and individuality, curly and wavy hair is becoming more popular. Thanksgiving dinner is the perfect opportunity to showcase your unique curls or waves. To enhance your natural texture after washing your hair, use curl-defining products like mousse, curl cream, and gel. It seems like a lot of products but trust the process.
While your hair is still saturated, use a microfiber towel and scrunch up all the way to the root. Do this a few times and in sections. You can let your hair air dry or gently diffuse it with a blow dryer. This tends to be the most time-consuming part, but once your hair is dry, it will give you effortless and gorgeous curls or waves that are perfect for the holiday season. If you experience any of that “crunch”, use a bit of hair oil to work it out.
