Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays shouldn’t mean sacrificing your perfectly applied makeup. Or maybe, you don’t know how to reapply it over makeup. In the skincare world, sunscreen and SPF are the BEST anti-aging defense you can do. In this post, we’ll explore why it’s crucial to reapply sunscreen throughout the day and share three super easy ways to reapply that won’t disrupt your makeup. Plus, recommendations for products that make the process seamless!
The Importance of Sunscreen in Your Daily Routine
Before diving into the techniques, let’s quickly touch on why sunscreen is a vital part of your skincare routine. The sun emits two types of harmful UV rays – UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, causing premature aging and wrinkling. They are present during all daylight hours and can penetrate through glass, making it essential to protect the skin even while indoors.
On the other hand, UVB rays cause sunburns and can lead to skin cancer. These rays are strongest between 10 am – 4 pm. Both types of rays can cause damage to the skin, making it essential to protect yourself from them.
If you’re at the age in your skincare routine that you’re also using Retinol or chemical peels, incorporating sunscreen is even more crucial. These products can make your skin extra sensitive to the sun’s rays, making it easier for damage to occur.
What Is SPF and How Much Should I Use?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and measures how well the sunscreen protects against UVB rays. The higher the SPF number, the more protection it provides. It’s recommended to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, which blocks out 97% of the sun’s rays. Anything lower than that may not provide adequate protection. While most people aim for SPF 30, using an SPF 50 is even more effective at blocking out the sun’s rays.
Keep in mind that no sunscreen can block all UV rays, making it essential to reapply throughout the day.
The recommended amount of the sunscreen product is also important to remember! You should be using a nickel-sized amount of product for your face and a shot glass size for your body.
Here’s another easy way to remember the proper amount of SPF you need for your face. Apply a strip of liquid or cream SPF along the full length of both your index and middle fingers. This amount is typically enough to cover your face and neck, providing the level of protection indicated on the product.
Choosing the Best Sunscreen – Mineral, Chemical, or International?
When it comes to sunscreen, there are a few different types to choose from – mineral, chemical, or international. With any option, it’s also best to opt for a lightweight, non-greasy formula that’s ideal for layering. Mineral sunscreens use ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to physically block sun rays by sitting on top of the skin. Chemical sunscreens use chemicals like avobenzone and octinoxate to absorb UV rays and convert them into heat which is then released from the skin.
International sunscreens follow guidelines and regulations set by other countries, instead of those set by the FDA in the United States. Korea, Japan, Australia, and other E.U. countries regulate sunscreen as a cosmetic instead of an over-the-counter drug like the U.S. Because of this, these countries have developed far more advanced sunscreens than the U.S.
At this time, the FDA has not approved a new sunscreen formula or chemical in over 20 years!
These international sunscreens are so innovative, that many are combining moisturizers for different skin types with effective SPF. This makes them even easier to use every day, and even better to reapply with. They also include full spectrum protection, adding ratings like P.A. ++++ and +++ to their products, which indicates how much protection they provide against UVA rays.
Tips for Sunscreen Compatibility with Makeup
- Look for “non-comedogenic” products to prevent clogged pores.
- SPF setting sprays can refresh makeup and add protection.
- Sunscreen powders can mattify and protect the hairline if wearing a hat isn’t your style.
With that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of the BEST SPF Sunscreens that are perfect for your face and reapplying over your makeup.
Best Mineral Sunscreen for Under Makeup:
- Kosas DreamBeam Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40 – a clean ingredient as well as reef-safe that layers beautifully under makeup
Light-Weight Chemical Sunscreens for Daily Use:
- Naturium UV Reflect Antioxidant SPF 50 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen – incredibly light weight, with fast absorption, and even great for those with an oily complexion. One of the top U.S. sunscreens to easily reapply with
Quick & Useful Spf Setting Sprays:
Best International Sunscreens and SPF Moisturizers
- Beauty of Joseon – Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotic SPF50+ PA++++ – viral sunscreen that started the kbeauty sunscreen sensation. A rich, creamy formula that can take the place of your moisturizer especially if you have dry skin. You can find this at a reputable site like Stylevana.com
- Round Lab – Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Cushion SPF50+ PA++++ – convenient, travel-friendly sunscreen compact that dries down quickly.
- SKIN1004 – Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50 PA++++ – one of the best sunscreens for an oily complexion
Step-by-Step Guide for Reapplication
- Using a Brush: Use a foundation brush to lightly dab cream sunscreen over the face, ensuring an even layer. Products like the Beauty of Joseon or the Naturium UV Reflect are perfect for this. Again, remember the two-fingers length amount of product. Blotting first, and light motions until the product is blended in won’t disrupt your makeup. And don’t worry – it will dry down, especially with the products recommended above.
- Use a cushion or sponge: Some kbeauty sunscreens like the Round Lab – Birch Juice is available in a travel-friendly compact. Similar to the brush technique, blot any excess oil first. Then, dab (do not swipe) the sunscreen onto your face and continue to blend in. Super easy reapplication in seconds!
- Spray Sunscreen: This is probably the easiest and most convenient way to reapply your sunscreen over makeup. Hold the spray an arm’s length away and mist lightly over the face, avoiding direct contact with the eyes. About 20 pumps will provide the recommended amount. I know that’s a lot, which is why I think the Vacation Super Spritz wins out over the Kate Somerville. I’ll break it down below:
- Kate Somerville UncompliKated SPF – 3.4 oz. which is a great size, but makes it less travel-friendly. It also has a powerful aerosol mist which makes controlling the amount a little trickier. It is lightweight, dries down quickly, and most importantly does not sting the eyes!
- Vacation Super Spritz SPF 50 Face Mist – 2.2 oz. in a slimmer container making it more convenient to travel around with and fits in most handbags. It’s also an atomized mist with a pump so you have more control over where the mist sprays and how much. It also dries quickly and does not sting the eyes.
- Both are great and super easy options to reapply sunscreen over makeup, it’s just your preference.
Convenient Powder Sunscreen for Reapplication Around Your Hairline and Part
While powder sunscreens are great for the hairline, they may not provide enough protection for the face. This is because most people do not apply enough powder to get the recommended amount of SPF. However, it’s still a good option for reapplication around your hairline and part if you are going hat-free outside.
Some recommended powder sunscreen options for easy reapplication include:
- Colorscience Total Protection Sheer Matte SPF 30 Sunscreen Brush – This is a translucent mineral powder SPF that blends in easily and helps diffuse excess oil. Amazon is an authorized retailer for Colorscience so as long as you shop their products from their storefront here, you’re getting the real product.
- Supergoop! Mineral (Re)setting Powder SPF 35 – This is a lightweight, sweat-resistant powder that comes in different shades to match your skin tone. It also has a mirror and applicator brush for on-the-go touch-ups.
Frequency of Reapplication
Factors like your environment and activity determine how often you should reapply. If indoors, every four hours is a good rule of thumb. Outdoors, aim for every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating. These easy ways to reapply sunscreen over your makeup should make that effortless for you!
What about Tinted SPF?
Tinted SPF products have become increasingly popular, as they provide both sun protection and coverage in one product. However, it’s important to note that the tint does not add any additional sun protection. The level of SPF listed on the product is still the same, regardless of whether it is tinted or not. I’ll have an entire list of the Best Tinted Moisturizers with SPF in another post for you to check out!
The same rules apply for reapplication with tinted SPF – every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating. So if you’re using a tinted product, make sure to still follow the same guidelines for reapplying to ensure proper protection from the sun.
Consequences of Neglecting Sunscreen Reapplication
Skipping reapplication can increase your risk of sun damage and signs of premature aging. Don’t take chances with your skin’s health and beauty. Make sure to reapply sunscreen regularly and effectively. Some signs of sun damage include:
- Sunburn
- Premature wrinkles and fine lines
- Dark spots and hyperpigmentation
Don’t let these consequences scare you, but rather motivate you to take proper precautions when it comes to sun protection. Remember, prevention is always better than cure.
To Wrap Things Up…
Everyday exposure to UV rays, even on cloudy days or when indoors near windows, can lead to skin damage over time. Wearing sunscreen daily protects your skin from sunburns and long-term risks like premature aging and skin cancer. This essential step ensures your skin remains healthy, resilient, and radiant. And most importantly, laying a protective barrier between you and the harmful effects of the sun.
With these 3 super easy ways to reapply sunscreen over your makeup, you’ll have no excuse to skip this necessary step. By prioritizing sun protection, you are not only safeguarding your skin from these harmful UV rays but also promoting long-term skin health and vitality. Your skin will be grateful for the care and attention you give it!
