I’ll also showcase some of DTLA’s most spine-chilling watering holes, and even throw in some fashion tips to ensure you look hauntingly fabulous.
The Allure of Haunted Bar Crawls
There’s something irresistibly thrilling about combining the excitement of a bar crawl with the mystery of the paranormal.
For local thrill-seekers and supernatural enthusiasts, a haunted bar crawl in DTLA offers the perfect blend of history, hauntings, and high spirits (both literal and figurative).
And anytime in Fall, especially in October is a great time of the year to organize one of your own!
DTLA is rich with stories of ghostly encounters, making it the ideal setting for an unforgettable night out and a fun idea you can do with your friends.
If you’re visiting for the first time and want to discover a new city in a unique way, visiting any of these haunted bars is definitely the way to go.
Plus, experiencing these local venues and supporting the local businesses is a great way to become immersed in the community and discover hidden gems in this bustling city.
Unearthing DTLA’s Eerie History
Before you set off on your haunted bar crawl, it’s important to understand the historical context that makes DTLA such a hotbed for paranormal activity.
The area is steeped in history, with buildings dating back to the early 20th century.
Many of these structures have witnessed untold tragedies, adding an extra layer of spookiness to your adventure.
From the old hotels that have seen more than their fair share of ghostly apparitions to bars that are rumored to be haunted by former patrons, DTLA is a paranormal enthusiast’s dream come true.
Famous Ghost Stories
One of the most famous ghost stories in DTLA is that of the Alexandria Hotel. This once-luxurious hotel has been the site of numerous spectral sightings. Guests have reported seeing the ghost of a woman in white wandering the hallways, as well as hearing mysterious footsteps when no one else is around.
Another chilling tale hails from the Millenium Biltmore Hotel, where the spirit of the “Black Dahlia” is said to roam around since it was one of the last places she was seen alive.
Now that you have a glimpse into the eerie past of DTLA, it’s time to start organizing your own haunted bar crawl adventure, ensuring you hit all the spine-chilling spots this area has to offer.
Planning Your Haunted Bar Crawl
Organizing a haunted bar crawl requires some careful planning to ensure a smooth, enjoyable, and spooky experience.
The planning process might seem pretty daunting but don’t worry.
I’ve got a step-by-step guide to get you started:
Selecting the Right Bars
First, choose different bars that not only serve great drinks but also have a reputation for being haunted.
My guide includes some of the best places in DTLA, known for their eerie histories and ghostly legends.
Creating a Timeline
Pre-planning your route and creating a timeline to ensure you get the most out of each stop is always a good idea.
Allow enough time at each bar to soak in the atmosphere and listen to any ghost stories the bar staff might share.
An ideal crawl should span 4-5 hours, giving you ample time to enjoy each bar without feeling rushed.
I recommend using Google Maps to map out your route. I’ve linked the one I created below. Feel free to save the screenshot as well!
Choosing a Date and Time
While you can visit any of these bars year-round, organizing your bar crawl during Halloween time is great way to give an extra spooky touch to the experience.
Weekends are ideal, but be aware that bars may be busier. Start your crawl in the early evening, around 7 or 8 PM, to give yourself plenty of time to visit multiple locations.
Coordinating with Bars and Making Reservations
Contact the bars in advance, especially if you have a large group.
Check out their social media or event page to see if the bars themselves are hosting any special events.
It’s best to also make reservations where possible to ensure your group can be accommodated. Many of these bars do take walk-ins though.
Themed Costumes and Accessories
Encourage your friends to dress up for the event. After all, it’s not every day that you organize a bar crawl!
This adds to the fun and creates great photo opportunities.

Many of the bars I’ll mention below highly encourage costumes as we get closer to Halloween.
Staying Safe During Your Crawl
Safety is paramount, especially when alcohol is involved.
DTLA is still a major metropolitan area. So it’s important to stay alert and look out for each other during your bar hopping.
Group Safety
Probably the most important rule is to make sure you stick with your group of friends. Whether it’s a larger party or just two of you, there’s safety in numbers.
And establish a meeting point in case anyone gets separated.
Know Your Limits
It’s easy to get carried away with the excitement, but remember to drink responsibly.
Know your limits and pace yourself to enjoy the night without any mishaps.
You’ll have much more memorable experiences this way!
Transportation
And lastly, arrange for safe transportation at the end of the night.
If you decide to drive, designate a sober driver who can safely drive everyone home. There are many parking lots with attendants in this area, and I’ll include a screenshot of that below.
One of the easiest options is to book an Uber or Lyft. DTLA does have taxis as well. LA City Cab is the most known, and you can use an app to order one.
With your preparations complete and safety plans in place, it’s time to explore the thrilling atmosphere of DTLA’s most haunted hot spots.
